Some things you need to know - and this is one of them!

Starting in January 2004 the Highways Agency is going to widen the M25 motorway near Heathrow Airport between junction 12 (M3 interchange) and junction 15 (M4 interchange).

This section of the M25 is one of the busiest in Europe - carrying over 200'000 vehicles per day and widening this part of the motorway is the only solution.

The work

Widening will start from 5 January 2004 - make a note, so you're not caught unawares - work will be 24-hours a day, seven days a week and is scheduled to continue for two years. It will also provide a spur road for the new Terminal 5 being built at Heathrow.

Traffic management

To help keep traffic moving there will be the same number of lanes as exist at the moment - four lanes in each direction at peak times - but they will be narrower. HGVs will use lanes 1 and 2 ONLY. If vehicles need to exit the motorway within the works they should only use the nearside lane.

For the safety of motorists and workers there will be a 40mph speed limit and safety cameras will enforce the speed restriction. There will also be a buffer lane between the two carriageways to separate the on-coming traffic.

A free recovery service will be in operation to help broken-down vehicles. CCTV cameras will be used to make sure that delays and incidents are dealt with quickly.

Avoiding delays

Delays are expected especially during the peak times. Help to keep traffic moving by driving safely - plan ahead, allow more time, be patient and considerate to others, observe all road-side signs - they are there to help you.

The Highways Agency wants you to get there safely - so now you know!

What should I do if I break down on the motorway?

There are 24-hour surveillance cameras monitoring the traffic throughout the works. If you breakdown through this section of the motorway please remain in your vehicle and our free on site recovery service will come to your rescue and remove you to a safe area.
