The project team are pleased to announce that the main line earthworks for the Thorney Bypass have now been completed and the six-month settlement period is underway throughout the length of the bypass. Over the last 10 weeks we have placed approximately 200,000 m3 of sand and gravel (approx 8,000 t every day).
The completion of the embankments is a significant milestone for the project as it is allows the settlement to occur predominantly during the winter months. We therefore get the benefit of carrying out the carriageway construction during the summer and autumn of 2005.
The next few weeks will be relatively quiet on the scheme with only minor works such as fencing, farm access tracks, minor drainage and services diversions (BT, Anglian Water, Transco etc) being undertaken. Major roadworks activities will recommence after Easter when we are able to start work on the Link Road surfacing. Construction of the main bypass concrete carriageway will be commencing in July.
Overall we are pleased with the progress achieved to date and we hope that it may be possible to open the bypass early, towards the end of 2005.
Both Birse and WS Atkins staff will remain on site throughout the duration of the works so if you have any queries or concerns please don't hesitate to contact them or the Highways Agency Team direct on the numbers below.
