Progress Report December 2004

Excavation within the Thorney Bypass borrow pit has now been ongoing for several weeks and to date in excess of 75,000m3 of gravel has been removed. A total of 175,000m3 will be required to complete the embankments so we will soon reach the half way mark.

Embankment construction is progressing well with 3000 m3 of fill material being placed each day. The dry November and early December has assisted production greatly and the use of tower lights is allowing work to continue into the evening making the most of the favourable weather.

The tie in location (which will become the West Roundabout) can now be clearly seen from the existing A47. The fill operation is now progressing east towards the east tie in at a rate of approximately 100m per day. Completion of the earthworks is expected towards the end of February next year, which will allow the road construction to commence next summer following the settlement period.

The plant crossing on Station Road has now been in operation for several weeks and we hope this is not causing too much disruption. We have also extended the existing 30mph speed limit on Station Road and on the A47 to the west of Thorney. These speed restrictions are for the safety of the workforce and the general public.

We have recently recommenced haulage of gravel through Thorney down to the east Roundabout. Approximately 2000 loads will pass through Thorney over the next 6 weeks. This quantity is in line with our original proposals.
