Progress Report - November 2004
Embankment construction for the Thorney Bypass is now well underway although during September and early October progress was slowed when water voles were found in many of the ditches crossing the site. Water voles are a protected species so it was necessary use licensed specialists to trap and relocate the water voles prior to recommencing work. Heavy rain during much of October also hampered operations and in particular the excavation of new ditches along with backfilling the old ones. The clay material that underlies the bypass is very weather susceptible and heavy rain makes the material unusable.
In recent weeks we have commenced importing fill material for the main embankment. The section between the West Roundabout and Station Road is nearly complete. The material being used for the embankment is sand and gravel, which is far less weather susceptible than the clay. Therefore work will be able to progress through the winter months. The material is being supplied from a borrow pit established specifically for the bypass on the north side of the A47 (opposite Pode Hole Gravel Works). Approximately 400,000 tonnes of gravel will be required for the scheme. (20,000 lorry loads)
Construction of the embankment for the Thorney Link Road at the east end of the bypass is now complete. As with all of the embankments a 6-month settlement period is required before road construction can begin. The link road is important because it allows us to temporarily divert the A47 traffic off of the existing alignment between Pigeons Off Farm and Pigeons Farm where the new bypass sits on top of the existing A47. Work will recommence on the link road in May 2005 when surfacing work starts.
During November / December we will be continuing with the embankment filling operation progressing in an easterly direction. We will soon need to cross Station Road using the newly constructed plant crossing. Traffic lights will control this crossing and it may be necessary for road vehicles to wait for a few moments whilst 50t dump trucks cross the road. If weather forecasts are good we will be looking to work some weekends to catch up some of the lost time.
Our site offices and compound are now fully established at High Trees Farm. Unfortunately we are still waiting for BT to provide the main telephone lines and computer links. The Site Careline is however in place and we can be contacted on 01733 270251 should you have any queries or concerns.
