Progress Report - November 2005
We are aiming to open the bypass next month, some six months ahead of the contract completion date. However there remains a lot of work still to be done and much of that is weather dependent.
Main Carriageway Nears Completion
Work has progressed well over recent weeks on construction of the main carriageway. We have completed the majority of the "blacktop" surfacing over the reinforced concrete and surfaced the central reserve.
Safety fencing and traffic sign installation is well advanced and over the next couple of weeks the white lines should be installed.
Grass seeding work is awaiting dryer weather.
Station Road Footbridge - Main Span Erection
On 29th September 2005 the main span of Station Road Footbridge was lifted into position and welded onto its supporting columns.
The main span is the first of 11 sections to be erected. When complete the bridge will be 270m long and weigh approximately 220t.
A 200t capacity crane was used to lift the 34m long, 28t, box beam. High winds during the preceding days had delayed the erection.
The remaining spans and the staircases will be erected over the next two weeks followed by welding, painting and finishing works.
Station Road Roundabout Construction
This is the most complicated area of roadworks on the contract owing to the need to keep Station Road open and the large number of businesses and homes requiring constant access.
The West half of the roundabout is currently being surfaced. Traffic will switch during the week commencing 14th November, freeing up the East half for construction. Traffic lights will remain in use until the works are complete. A weekend closure has been agreed for 3rd & 4th December to complete the surfacing. Accesses will be maintained throughout.
