The relatively quiet spell on the Thorney Bypass is now coming to an end. Major construction activity can shortly recommence as the 6-month settlement period is nearing completion. Work will start first on the Thorney Link Road at the east end on Monday 23rd May 2005.

Over recent weeks we have been completing the ditching excavation, which provides the drainage for the bypass. We are also close to completing the last section of Old Wryde Drain realignment.

Fabrication of the Station Road Footbridge is due to commence shortly. This will be done off-site at a local fabricators workshop in Peterborough and will take several months. Approximately 230t of high quality steel will need to be accurately cut and shaped to form the intricately spiralled approach ramps and curved main span. The foundations for the bridge are to be installed in early June. A "Continuous Flight Auger" solution (drilled holes filled with reinforced concrete) is being used instead of driven steel piles, which will significantly reduce noise levels.

We have recently undertaken cement stabilisation trials on site. We will be using a large tractor-type "rotivator" to mix cement, water and gravel in-situ where it is then rolled and trimmed to form the 150mm thick concrete base to the road. The latest laser-guided bulldozers are being utilised to achieve a demanding 10mm tolerance. This layer will subsequently be topped of with 200mm of high quality concrete and a bituminous wearing course.

The high quality concrete will be mixed at a specially installed batcher situated in Pode Hole Quarry. A plant crossing on the A47 between Pode Hole and the site will be constructed shortly to allow delivery wagons to access the site. Off peak traffic lights will be required to build the plant crossing. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
