A14 Rookery Crossroads - November Update

£10 Million A14 Improvements at Rookery Crossroads near Bury St Edmunds.

Work on a £10 Million improvement scheme to reduce accidents and increase safety along a 1.5 mile (2.5km) stretch of the A14 east of Bury St Edmunds, from Two Mile Spinney to Home Farm at Rougham including the rookery Crossroads began on the 8 November 2004.

Transport Minister, David Jamieson, said in a press notice dated 26 October 2004

"I am delighted that work will start in earnest next month on this much-needed improvement. It will provide safer access to and from the A14 and remove the risk of accidents associated with turning and crossing the A14 by closing the central reservation gaps. The Government is committed to cutting the number of accidents on the road network and this scheme aims to do just that."

To ensure Highways Agency road workers are protected during the construction there are narrow lanes and a 40mph speed restriction on the A14 near Bury St Edmunds.

If traffic flows are light at certain times during the day, the contractors may take the opportunity to close one lane of the A14 and carry out work. This will not happen during peak hours. There will also be occasional overnight and weekend lane closures.

The existing Rookery Crossroads will be replaced with a new two-level junction carrying the A14 across local roads. The Rookery Crossroads scheme also includes closure of the central reservation gap crossing at Two Mile Spinney, closure of the Two Mile Spinney junction with the U8003 side road from Blackthorpe, and the realignment of about one mile of the existing A14. Many direct means of private access to the Trunk road will also be closed.
