This framework sets out how we, together with the Department for Transport, manage and deliver major road improvement projects.

The Bypass
- The A421 Great Barford Bypass is one of the schemes included in the Government's Targeted Programme of Improvements.
- In February 2003 the Public Inquiry was held and the Secretary of State's decision to proceed with the bypass was published in September 2003.
- In April 2004, the Highways Agency awarded the 'Early Contractor Involvement' contract to design and construct the new road to the Edmund Nuttall / Capita Symonds team.
- Details of the scheme are shown on the plan. Its overall length is about 4.8 miles (7.7km).
Working with the local community
- The project team is committed to working with the community to lessen the impact of construction works on residents, road users and the general public.
- This construction scheme has been carefully planned by the Edmund Nuttall team to minimise noise and disturbance to the local community.
- Noise and pollution levels will be monitored during construction activities.
- All construction activities will be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the Considerate Constructors Scheme.
- Through visits to local schools, we will encourage participation to generate safety awareness and information on local history and archaeology with competitions and class projects.
- Clean, controlled and safe routes for public access through and past the works will be maintained at all times on both public roads and rights of way.
- Impact on the local narrow road network will be minimised by the provision of a haul route through the site from end to end.
- Newsletters and letter drops will explain how works may affect residents. To provide the community with further information, the construction team will have posters displayed at prominent locations during the course of the work to provide progress updates and answer questions.
- Our Community Liaison Officer will be available to respond to your questions and concerns. His telephone number is 01234 871429.
Protecting the Environment
- Ecological and Archaeological studies and mitigation works commenced prior to contract award to minimise the effects of construction on the natural and cultural heritage. They will continue throughout the duration of the works.
- Pollution control measures will be implemented to prevent any contamination of the local rivers and streams.
- Recycling techniques will be incorporated into the design to maximise the use of on-site materials. This reduces the need for thousands of delivery lorries bringing imported quarried stone.
- There will be approximately 145,000 new trees and shrubs planted. These proposals will help integrate the new road into the existing environment over time.
