Introduction

M60 Motorway

Welcome to this first issue of our newsletter for the M60 Junctions 5 to 8 Widening.

In these newsletters we aim to tell you about the construction of the widening works and how they will affect you. We shall give information about what it is that we shall be doing and how we are going to do it.

We shall give details of how to get in touch with us during the works if you have matters of concern or want information about the scheme.

Construction works can be disruptive to people's daily lives and we shall put in place measures to keep down the level of disruption. Despite this there may be times when we have to do some noisy or night-time works. Our commitment is that we shall advise people in advance of these works to avoid surprises.

We trust that you will find these newsletters interesting and helpful as one means of keeping you informed about these important works in improving the motorways in the Manchester area.

Contract Award

The £102 million contract to design and construct the M60 Widening was awarded to the AMEC/Alfred McAlpine Joint Venture on 3 March of this year.

Parkman will be acting as the Highways Agency's site representatives to ensure that the requirements of the contract are satisfied. Works on site will commence at the end of July.

Where The Works Will Take Place

The map below gives an overall view of where the works will be taking place. Details will be available to view at the Public Exhibitions in June/July and we encourage you to come and look for yourselves and meet some of the project team.

Start of Widening Works

The contract to widen the motorway will be carried out in three phases.

Phase 1 is already underway, and during this first 4-month period the contractor, with its designer Halcrow, will be carrying out the detailed design of the works.

Phase 2 marks the start of works on site and the continuation of the detailed design. During June the contractor aims to establish offices for the project close to the motorway site ready for a start of construction at the end of July. The works in this phase will be off the line of the existing motorway and will include embankment widening, screen mounding, utility diversions and start of bridge construction. There will be minimal traffic management on the motorway during this phase.

Phase 3, starting some 8 months later in spring 2004, will be the major part of the works involving traffic management on the motorway. These works will be designed to ensure that traffic lanes are maintained at peak times but will include speed restrictions, overnight motorway closures and slip road closures. The whole of the widening work is programmed to be complete by Spring 2006.

Public Exhibitions

In order to give residents the chance to find out more about the construction of the works and to meet representatives of the project team, a series of public exhibitions is being held as detailed below.

Please come along to one of these venues where you will have the chance to discuss any concerns you may have about the work that will be taking place.

Fencing has been erected in some areas to make the site secure for the benefit of the public. The Dovecote has been successfully taken down from its previous location at Junction 6 and is being rebuilt in Walkden Gardens, Sale.
