The Project

The Highways Agency is carrying out a series of improvement works on the M1 between junctions 20 and 21, which when complete will result in improved safety for all road users, lower road surface noise and reduced congestion.

On 9 January 2006 we started work to make environmental improvements to the drainage system into Whetstone Brook to improve the quality of water entering the brook. The work was completed on 5 February 2006 ahead of schedule.

Traffic Management

The Highways Agency actively plans to minimise the impact of the works on road users. We will set up diversion routes with clear signs and also install signs at the roadside to let road users know when each section of work is due to start.

How you can plan your journey

Roadworks inevitably cause delay but you can play your part in keeping traffic moving by taking extra care, planning your journey and allowing more time.

  • follow the signed diversion routes
  • avoid the works area if possible
  • check traffic conditions by calling 08700 660 115 or logging on to www.highways.gov.uk/traffic
