The Project
We have completed a series of improvement works on the M1, between junctions 20 and 21, to improve safety for all road users, lower road surface noise and reduce congestion.
The works at the M69 connection to Junction 21 were started on 24th April 2006 and completed on 24th November 2006.
The works involved:
- Creating a new lane connecting the A5460 to the M1 South
- Installing a new full time traffic signal system with MOVA control to reduce queuing
- Widening the south side of the roundabout to create a fourth lane
- Modifications to signs, lighting and safety barriers
- New anti-skid surfacing and improved road markings on the roundabout
Traffic Management
We actively planned to minimise the impact of the works on road users. We set up diversion routes with clear signs and also installed signs at the roadside to let road users know when each section of work was due to start.
The works took place 24/7 and generally involved the temporary loss of one lane onto and around the roundabout. Speed restrictions applied. We advised road users to use alternative routes if possible.
The works required further periodic overnight lane closures and road closures for which we set up fully signed diversion routes. There were no works on the M1 through route and the M69 to M1 north link.
The works were planned to minimise any impact on seasonal shopping activities and local events.
