The Project
The Highways Agency is resurfacing the southbound carriageway of the A38 from Hilliards Cross (south of Alrewas) to the Swinfen Island interchange with the A5206/A5148. We are also improving drainage, safety barriers and carrying out maintenance work to some of the structures along the route.
How long will it take?
The work started on 9 January 2006 and will last about six weeks.
When will the work be carried out?
To minimise disruption to drivers the work will be carried out when traffic is lowest, overnight from 8.00pm to 6.00am weekdays and 24-hour working at weekends.
While work is in progress the A38 southbound carriageway will be closed. Outside working hours the A38 will be reopened to traffic under a 30mph speed limit.
How will this affect the traffic?
We have carefully timed the work to minimise the impact on local and through traffic in the area. However, to complete the work we will need to close the A38 southbound on several occasions. The work will be split into two phases and each phase should last about 3 weeks.
In addition to closing the A38 southbound, we will also need to close some slip roads off the A38 at various times during the work. These will be the Hilliards Cross southbound entry slip road, the Streethay southbound exit slip road, the Cappers Lane southbound entry slip road and the southbound exit slip road at the Swinfen interchange.
Will there be a speed restriction?
A temporary 24-hour 30mph speed limit will be enforced for the duration of the work.
Is there an alternative route?
Traffic will be diverted when the slip roads are closed. The diversion routes will mainly be confined to the A38, although some local roads will need to be used. Advance notice will be given and diversion routes will be clearly signed.
