The Project

We have completed major improvement work on the A38 at Bassetts Pole junction in Staffordshire.

We have widened the roundabout to three lanes to increase capacity and widened the approach connections. We have also renewed the road surface, installed traffic signals to improve the flow around the island, installed new street lighting and upgraded the safety barrier. This will improve safety, reduce congestion and extend the life of the road.

How long did it take?

Work was started in early January 2006 and was completed on 8th August 2006.

When was the work carried out?

To minimise disruption to drivers, the work was carried out during off-peak hours when there was less traffic.

How did this affect the traffic?

A temporary 24-hour 30mph speed limit was enforced for the duration of the work for safety reasons.

It was necessary to close the roundabout for some overnight periods and for four full weekends.

The four weekend closures took place overnight from 8pm on Friday 19th May until 6am on Monday 22nd May, from 8pm on Friday 2nd June until 6am on Monday 5th June, from 8pm on Friday 9th June until 6am on Monday 12th June, and from 8pm on Friday 16th June until 6am on Monday 19th June.

Although the closures may have caused some inconvenience to road users, they have enabled this essential work to be completed safely and quickly. We actively planned to minimise the disruption to road users by giving advance notice of the closures and putting clearly signed diversion routes in place.

The widening works on the A453 and the A446 were carried out under local lane closures.

Was there an alternative route?

Traffic was diverted when the closures were in place. These diversion routes were fully signed. A map of the diversion route is available in the Contact Information and Map section.
