The options presented at the public consultation in March 2001 were:

• The Blue Route - on-line (asymmetrical) widening
• The Purple Route - on-line (parallel) widening
• The Red Route - off-line widening

Exhibitions were held in local venues and over 1000 people attended. A leaflet explaining the different routes and advertising the exhibitions was produced and distributed within the local area. The leaflet contained a questionairre for comments. Nearly 700 questionnaires, 25 letters and a petition were returned from local residents and businesses, local authorities, parish councils and others with an interest in the proposals. Nearly 98% of the responses came from people living or working close to the A2.
