The Project

Work will start in late February 2006 to resurface an area approximatley 1 mile (1.6 km) along Bescot Viaduct and replace the bridge decks joints in each direction.  This is due to general wear and tear on the carriageway over the past 15 years.

In accordance with "Customer First" which is the Highways Agency directive to minimise disruption to the travelling and local public wherever possible, the scheme is programmed to be completed in 9 weeks with all the work being carried out overnight during off peak times; as dictated by the traffic flows along the M6.

As soon as traffic levels have sufficiently reduced each night, work will commence - this will most probably be late evening.  Work will be carried out Monday to Saturday nights only with no work taking place on Sunday nights due to the predicted high volume of traffic.

Work will be carried out under lane closures until approx 0600 in order not to disrupt the rush hour traffic.

This project was procured via the Construction Management Framework. Find out more about this type of procurement.

Traffic Management

The slip roads at Jct 9 will be closed during the night when work is taking place on that carriageway with diversion routes via Jct 7 and Jct 10.

It is unfortunately unavoidable that local residents will experience an increase to the normal motorway noise levels during the planning, resurfacing and plug joint operations for a period of approximately 50 nights during the works.  To try to ensure that the noise levels are kept at a minimum the following measures will be taken:

  • Work will only commence on one side of the motorway at any one time.
  • The work will be carried out in small sections, moving away from heavily populated areas as soon as possible.
  • The bridge deck joint work, which will be the noisiest, will be completed in the early part of the shift.
  • All equipment used will be muffled.
  • Noise barriers will be erected between the work and the public in densely populated areas.
