UPDATE 17 December 2007

Bowdon View Bridge carries the dedicated slip road off from the westbound M56 and, so that it can remain in service, we've recently carried out a series of investigations into areas above the central pier as well as underneath the bridge. We also installed equipment to monitor the condition of the bridge.

These investigations have now been completed and we are now preparing a bridge replacement scheme. Further details will be made available in the new year.

Now that these monitoring and safeguarding works are completed, the temporary 50mph speed limit on the westbound exit slip road has been removed.

History

In 2000 temporary supports were installed to support the bridge's central pier.  A maintenance scheme, proposed for 2006, was postponed following bridge investigations. The slip road is now restricted to one lane because the Bowdon View Bridge that passes over the motorway cannot carry two lanes of traffic on it.

In 2006, we installed a new dedicated lane for the M56 westbound exit at junction 7. This new layout has improved safety and traffic flow at the diverge point of the junction.

This maintenance work was procured via the Construction Management Framework. Find out more about this type of procurement.
