The Project
Cliff Railway Bridge carries the M42 motorway over the Birmingham to Derby railway line, approximately 4 miles south of Tamworth.
The work, which began on 27 February 2006 involved the installation of new steel barriers in front of the existing bridge parapets, on both carriageways. Work was completed on 8 July 2006.
The parapet upgrading work will provide increased safety for both road and rail users.
Traffic Management
The work will take place over a 24 hour day, combining where necessary, both day and night time working.
The hardshoulder to each carriageway will be closed for the duration of the works. Two narrow running lanes will be provided throughout the day on both the north and southbound carriageways. Additionally, occasional overnight lane 1 closures will be used for material deliveries and critical construction operations (typically 11pm to 5am).
For the safety of road users and site operatives, the works areas will be protected by temporary barriers, and a temporary 50mph speed restriction will be in place at all times. There will be limited weekend working.
