Bridge Reconstruction
A46 Ashchurch Station Bridge Reconstruction
Purpose
The Highways Agency will be replacing the existing Ashchurch Station Bridge on the A46.
The new bridge will be situated to the north alongside the existing bridge. A new link road will be constructed to connect the existing A46 to the new bridge. The existing A46 will then be used to provide local access to the school, village hall and properties. The existing bridge will be demolished once the new road and bridge have been completed.
The Works
The majority of the work is to the north of the existing A46. There will be periods when temporary traffic signals and convoy working (measures to control the speed of the road users past the works), will be required for example, for links between the new and existing roads and the installation of utility diversions (electricity, gas etc.). Traffic management will be restricted to times outside the weekday morning and evening peak periods.
Construction is due to begin in April 2003 and should be completed at the end of October 2004. The demolition of the existing bridge will take place to fit in with railway operations.
Benefits
The majority of the properties on the southern side of the A46 are expected to experience an improvement in noise levels and air quality.
The scheme will also provide a substantial benefit for pedestrians and cyclists, using the wider bridge and new facilities alongside the road together with the new local access road. A Toucan crossing (for use by both pedestrians and cyclists) will replace the existing pedestrian crossing. Existing footpaths will be maintained and a new footpath provided from the northwest corner of the new bridge to the railway station.
