The Project
Work to improve safety on the A1 between Tuxford and West Drayton on the northbound approach to Markham Moor Roundabout began on Monday 3 April 2006 and were completed by Tuesday 12 April 2006.
Although the Agency is planning to start the upgrade of Markham Moor roundabout next year there is still a Public Inquiry to be held. These measures were needed now to remove the rutting and improve safety on the approach to the roundabout where there have been over 20 accidents in the last two years.
Under the scheme approximately 600m of the lane one carriageway, on the northbound approach to the A1/A57/B1164 Markham Moor roundabout was resurfaced to eliminate a rutting problem. The High Friction surfacing and yellow bar markings were renewed at the same time.
Measures to highlight the change in alignment of the northbound carriageway on the approach to the roundabout were also undertaken. These included the provision of high visibility lining and road studs, a high intensity reflective material which is attached to the central reserve safety barrier, so highlighting the bend in the road and drainage works to remove the risk of standing water in lane one
There are also further advanced warning signs to highlight the roundabout ("reduce speed now" and "1/2 mile" roundabout signs).
The works were carried out on the approach to Markham Moor roundabout commencing approximately 950m from the roundabout and finishing 200m from the give-way line.
