Latest Scheme Update
Following works to install a roundabout for the new ASDA store in 2006, it has been determined that further works are required to correct defects and optimize the junction layout. These works are due to start on 13 August 2007. Eight weeks have been allowed for these works, that includes some float for any unforeseen circumstances e.g. adverse weather conditions.
The works are minor works but will involve footway closures and carriageway lane closures. However, access will be maintained at all times for pedestrians and vehicles but there may be some disruption.
The Project
A new ASDA Supermarket has now been built near the A49/A465 Belmont Roundabout which opened on 23 October 2006.
As a direct result of this development the Highways Agency constructed a larger, more efficient roundabout, with traffic lights, which will also give access to the Supermarket. The improvements to the roundabout, funded by ASDA, will benefit local and through traffic by reducing congestion and improving traffic flow in the area.
At the same time the Highways Agency has installed 'Heritage' lighting columns on Greyfriars Bridge to complement the nearby conservation area. ASDA has used similar lighting columns as part of their new development.
Long Term Benefits
The new roundabout will improve traffic flow through Hereford.
- Upgrading and moving the services and utilities from the A49 carriageway will reduce future disruption in maintaining the road.
- The new road layout is a vital part of the ASDA development, which will also bring major employment opportunities to Hereford.
- ASDA are also providing funds to assist in the long-term prevention of flooding in the area.
- New Heritage lighting columns on Greyfriars Bridge, which will be matched by those at the ASDA development, will enhance the nearby conservation area.
Works and Traffic Management
The traffic signals were switched on Sunday 22 October in time for the ASDA store to open on Monday 23 October.
The traffic signals were operating on fixed time plans which did cause some disruption. Modifications have been made to the signals and to the signal timings.
In December work will start on moving the junction control strategy forward to be self-monitoring and demand responsive.
In the meantime there are some small jobs to complete around the junction. These works should be completed in the spring.
