The Overall Aim of the Study
The Overall Aim of the Study
The A38 Derby Junctions Study will produce options for improvements to the three junctions on the A38 shown on the map below. These aim to reduce the problems concerned with congestion and safety that currently exist. The three junctions are:
- A38/A5111 Junction (Kingsway)
- A38/A52 Junction (Markeaton)
- A38/A61 Junction (Abbey Hill)
The map below gives the location of these junctions.
In addition to a broad range of transport surveys, a variety of consultations have been conducted to gather opinions from local people, local and national businesses and other interested parties on the problems at each of the junctions. These are assisting in determining which improvements might resolve them. Newsletters, questionnaires and public meetings have been used in order to do this. So far, over 1,600 local people, together with national organisations, have contributed to the consultation process through the following methods:
- E-mails
- Telephone calls to the hotline
- Letters
- Self-completion questionnaires
- Two public meetings
- The Wider Reference Group. This is made up of both local and national businesses, pressure groups, charities and transport bodies
- Meetings with Local Authority elected members
What we have learnt from you
- The conflict of local and through traffic at each of the three study junctions is seen as a major cause of congestion.
- A large percentage of traffic using the A38 is travelling long distance.
- Congestion at the junctions causes several problems including:
- Excessive delay
- Driver stress
- Accidents
- Pollution
- Noise
- Congestion at the junctions causes traffic to divert off the A38 onto less suitable routes.
- Pedestrian and cycle provision needs to be improved at all junctions.
- Traffic speeds on the roundabouts are high, making it difficult for stationary traffic to join them.
- Poor lane discipline or inappropriate lane use is seen as dangerous at each junction.
- The A38 is seen as a barrier to the local communities.
- People want improvements to the frequency and reliability of public transport.
The Possible Solutions
These observations, together with the existing traffic conditions have been considered and a series of possible solutions have been developed for each junction. Some possible solutions are given in the inside of this Newsletter. We would welcome your views.

All options are designed to reduce congestion, improve safety, together with enhancing conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport where possible.
Junction Improvement Options
The following diagrams show a range of the options currently under consideration for the three junctions. These are aimed the at addressing the concerns raised from consultation and observation of existing conditions. The different time scales are: (a) Short Term, (b) Medium Term and (c) Long Term. These are defined as follows:
- Short Term Options Low cost options, designed as short term relief to improve the current situation and provide some benefit for up to 5 years.
- Medium Term Options Designed as solutions which will cater for existing demand and provide significant user benefits for 5 to 10 years.
- Long Term Options Designed as solutions which will cater for existing and all current projected demand for at least 15 years from opening.
All options are designed to reduce congestion, improve safety, together with enhancing conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport where possible. Theses are not the only options that are or will be considered. They form part of an on going strategy development for the junctions. All comments on theses schemes are welcome using the various methods of contacting us shown on the back of this newsletter.
Public Transport Options
In tandem with all the above options, improvements in public transport are being considered to complement any junction improvements. Possible locations for public transport priority measures are being considered to complement any junction improvement. Possible locations for public transport priority measures are shown as a red dotted line on the plans.
