The Project
- The Rye resurfacing works between "Skinners" Fishmarket road roundabout and Rock channel were completed on Tuesday 9 May 2006.
- Phases 2 and 3 started together on Wednesday the 10 May 2006, resurfacing from Rock Channel to St Margaret's Terrace and were completed Saturday 13 May - one week ahead of schedule.
The next two phases, from St Margaret's Terrace to "Kettle of Fish" Wish Street Roundabout took place between Monday 15 May and Saturday 20 May 2006.
What happened?
At the end of April 2006, the Highways Agency started works to resurface the A259 through Rye, from the "Kettle of Fish" Wish Street roundabout to the "Skinners" Fishmarket Road roundabout. A new zebra crossing was also installed at Strand Quay. These works lasted approx 6 weeks
What was involved and why was it necessary?
The works started with the installation of the new zebra crossing which provided improved pedestrian crossing facilities. This was followed by resurfacing that involved the removal of the existing surface material to be replaced with a smoother, quieter surface. These works were essential to maintain a high quality road surface through Rye as part of an ongoing programme of works by the Highways Agency.
Due to the confined working space, it was necessary to close sections of the A259, one after the other during the duration of the works. During the closure of each section, there was no access by car to residential properties directly affected or to residential properties on any side roads also affected by each closure.
When the closure was in place, those residents affected were provided with free overnight parking in a local car park. An overnight watchman provided security.
The works took place between 0800 and 1800, Monday to Saturday. Each section of the works under repair remained closed outside these hours. The Highways Agency worked closely with The Rye Partnership and East Sussex County Council to minimise disruption. All local businesses and attractionsopened again as normal.
What were the diversion routes?
There were separate diversion routes for cars and heavy goods vehicles.which were clearly signed.
