A1 Leeming to Barton Improvement

Temporary Road Works in July and August 2015
A series of temporary road works will continue throughout July and August in conjunction with the main construction works.
Nightly (8pm to 6am the following morning) from Saturday 25 July until Friday 31 July and from Monday 3 August until Friday 7 August there will be full closures of the A1 and A1(M) southbound between Scotch Corner and junction 51 (Leeming). There will also be full overnight closures of the A1 and A1(M) from 8pm on Saturday 1 August until 6am on Sunday 2 August and from 8pm Saturday 8 August until 6am on Sunday 9 August northbound between Junction 50 (Baldersby) and Scotch Corner and southbound between Scotch Corner and Junction 51 (Leeming).
In addition to the above closures, Catterick North Southbound exit slip will be fully closed until Saturday 8 August, starting on Saturday 2 May and Catterick North Northbound exit slip will be permanently closed from Monday 17 August. Kneeton Lane will be closed from 9am on Tuesday 28 July until Thursday 30 July, and also from 9am on Tuesday 4 August until 5pm the same day.
There will also a mainline traffic switch occurring during the full closures this month, with A1 traffic being moved from existing onto new sections of carriageway to allow works to progress. Between Scotch Corner and Catterick North A1 southbound traffic will also be moved from the existing carriageway to the new southbound carriageway from the 8 August.
On local roads temporary traffic lights are expected throughout construction of the scheme to help ease congestion around construction works. There are also several overnight closures of local roads and overnight lane closures of the A1 during this month to allow construction activities to take place safely.

Due to the provision of narrow lanes, lane 2 now has restrictions in place for vehicles over 6 feet 6 inches wide and/or heavier than 7.5 tonnes. The width and weight restrictions are varied throughout the roadworks, between junction 51 at Leeming Bar and junction 56 at Barton, in both directions. Drivers are asked to observe the signs throughout their journey and adhere to the restrictions.
What is happening?
In December 2012 the Chancellor of the Exchequer delivered his Autumn Statement to parliament announcing the decision to proceed with the remaining section of the A1 Dishforth to Barton scheme, between Leeming and Barton.
When and where is this happening?
The temporary traffic regulation order came into force on 3 April 2014 allowing us to install traffic management, including reduced speed limits and narrow lanes, on the A1 between Leeming A1(M) junction 51 and Barton junction 56. Main construction works are now underway between Leeming A1(M) junction 51 and A1 Scotch Corner junction in North Yorkshire.
Why is this happening and what will it cost?
The 12 mile section of the A1 between Leeming and Barton carries between 59,000 to 69,000 vehicles per day. It has poor alignment with many side road junctions, farms and field accesses. The accident rate is broadly in line with the national average for older dual carriageways, but the severity ratio is significantly higher. Incidents often lead to full closure of the route with lengthy diversions. This is the only section of non-motorway on the strategic M1/A1(M) route between London and Newcastle.
The estimated final outturn of £380 million was approved by the Secretary of State in January 2014 prior to the start of construction in March 2014.
How will the scheme be carried out?
The A1 Leeming to Barton upgrade will replace the existing dual carriageway with a new three lane motorway. It will also include the provision of a new Local Access Road alongside the new motorway, improving safety for local traffic from the surrounding communities. Access to the strategic road network will be via a new grade separated junction at Catterick and an improved junction at Scotch Corner.

The primary objective of the project is to improve safety and to improve journey time reliability between London and major urban centres in the north of England and Scotland.

Will there be roadworks?
A series of temporary road works are needed at varying locations and times for the remainder of the construction programme. The temporary works expected include various overnight lane closures and on the A1 along with two way temporary traffic lights on local roads. Lane closures (including hard shoulder) are not expected to impact on journey times, as work will take place overnight with the road remaining open throughout the day.
Please note a 50mph speed limit with narrow lanes will be in place until the completion of the scheme.

How will you manage traffic?
On local roads temporary two way traffic lights will ease congestions around the A1.
Where lane closures are required we will use traffic cones and temporary speed limits where appropriate.
Traffic management equipment may include narrow lanes, road cones, reduced speed limits, CCTV and cameras.
HGV restrictions will be in place between junction 51 at Leeming Bar and junction 56 at Barton, in both directions for vehicles over 6 feet 6 inches wide and/or 7.5 tonnes. Drivers are asked to observe the signs throughout their journey and adhere to the restrictions.
Will there be diversions?
Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place for road closures.
