Temporary Road Works in October 2014

A series of temporary road works will continue throughout October in conjunction with the main construction works. There will be various overnight lane closures on the A1 and two way traffic lights on local roads.

The lane closures (including hard shoulders) are required at varying locations and times for the remainder of the construction programme. These lane closures are not expected to impact on journey times, as the lane closures will mainly be overnight and the road will remain open.

A 50mph speed limit plus narrow lanes will be in place on the A1 until the completion of the scheme. For more information please visit the Journey Impact Page.

Made Orders (Scotch Corner to Barton) published on 23 August 2014

Made Orders (Catterick Lane / Tunstall Road) published on 26 June 2014

Further to the publication of draft Orders for an alternative alignment to the ‘2013 Made Orders’ scheme for the local road network in the vicinity of the Catterick Lane / Tunstall Road junction, the Secretary of State for the Department of Transport has decided to make this Order. The made Orders are open for high court objection between 26 June 2014 and 06 August 2014, further information regarding the objection process is documented in the Public Notices. Copies of the made Orders documents are available under Publications.

What is happening?

In December 2012 the Chancellor of the Exchequer delivered his Autumn Statement to Parliament announcing the decision to proceed with the remaining section of the A1 Dishforth to Barton scheme, between Leeming and Barton.

When and where is this happening?

Main construction works are now underway on the A1 between Leeming A1(M) junction 51 and A1 Scotch Corner junction in North Yorkshire. The temporary traffic regulation order came into force on 3 April 2014 allowing us to install traffic management, including reduced speed limits and narrow lanes, on the A1.

The section between A1 Scotch Corner junction and Barton A1(M) junction 56 is subject to statutory procedures.

Why is this happening and what will it cost?

The 12 mile section of the A1 between Leeming and Barton carries between 59,000 to 69,000 vehicles per day. It has poor alignment with many side road junctions, farms and field accesses. The accident rate is broadly in line with the national average for older dual carriageways, but the severity ratio is significantly higher. Incidents often lead to full closure of the route with lengthy diversions. This is the only section of non-motorway on the strategic M1/A1(M) route between London and Newcastle.

The estimated final outturn of £380 million was approved by the Secretary of State in January 2014 prior to the start of construction in March 2014.

How will the scheme be carried out?

The A1 Leeming to Barton upgrade will replace the existing dual carriageway with a new three lane motorway. It will also include the provision of a new Local Access Road alongside the new motorway, improving safety for local traffic from the surrounding communities. Access to the strategic road network will be via a new grade separated junction at Catterick and an improved junction at Scotch Corner.

What are the benefits?

The primary objective of the project is to improve safety and to improve journey time reliability between London and major urban centres in the north of England and Scotland.

Will there be roadworks?

Yes.

There will be various overnight lane closures on the A1 and two way traffic lights on local roads in October.

How will you manage traffic?

Two way traffic lights are temporary.

Where lane closures are required we will use traffic cones and temporary speed limits where appropriate.

Traffic management equipment may include narrow lanes, road cones, reduced speed limits, CCTV and cameras.

Will there be diversions?

Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place for road closures.
