A27 Chichester Drainage Improvements
Improvement Scheme
Part of our programme of improvements (generally with value <£10m)
What is happening?
We are carrying out work to improve the drainage system on the A27 Chichester Bypass.
When and where is this happening?
The A27 Chichester Bypass from Portfield Roundabout to Fishbourne Roundabout. Work will start on Monday 26 November 2012 and is scheduled for completion by late February 2013, with a break over the Christmas period where all restrictions will be removed. It will take place both during the daytime and overnight, up to seven days a week.
Why is this happening and what will it cost?
The A27 Chichester Bypass from Portfield Roundabout to Fishbourne Roundabout has a history of flooding when severe weather is experienced. This often leads to road lanes being closed for a lengthy period of time, whilst the water is removed to make the road safe again.
This scheme will cost £1.495M.
How will the scheme be carried out?
We will replace some of the drains, install new ones, repair faulty pipes, and install equipment to pump excess water away when heavy rainfall occurs.
How will this impact on my journey?
For more information please visit the Journey Impact page.
What are the benefits?
An improved drainage system will improve safety for vehicles travelling through the area, and will also ensure that we no longer have to regularly close lanes on the bypass during times of heavy rain, therefore improving congestion as well.
How do I find out more information?
More information will be posted on this project page as it becomes available. You can subscribe to be alerted when updates are made.
If you have any queries about this project you should contact the Highways Agency Information Line by emailing ha_info@highways.gsi.gov.uk or calling 0300 123 5000.
On this page you will find out more information about the impact this project will have on your journey. This includes details of any roadworks and how we will manage traffic through the project.
Will there be roadworks?
Road works will be in place starting on Monday 26 November 2012 and scheduled for completion by late February 2013, with a break over the Christmas period where all restrictions will be removed. They will take place both during the daytime and overnight, up to seven days a week.
In addition, part of the work needs a closure of the B2145 at its junction with the A27, south of Whyke Roundabout. This will be for 2 nights, currently scheduled for early December. Road users will follow a fully sign-posted diversion route for these nights, and signage on site will be used to confirm the dates for this.
How will you manage traffic?
Details of the traffic management for the week commencing 26 November 2012 are:
Daytime: We will be using narrow lanes on the A27 during the daytime to allow work to be carried out and two lanes to remain open in each direction, with a 40mph speed limit.
Night time: Between 8.00 pm and 6.00 am each night, there will be lane closures on the A27 and traffic will pass the work using the other available lane.
To install and remove the narrow lanes, we will need full road closures on a number of nights throughout the work between 8.00 pm and 6.00 am. These are currently planned as follows:
- Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 November 2012
- Thursday 20 December 2012
- Thursday 3, Friday 4, and Saturday 5 January 2013
- Friday 8 and Saturday 9 February 2013
These dates are subject to change, however we will use signage on site to inform road users of any changes.
Will there be diversions?
Traffic will be diverted via the A259, A286 and A285 throughout these closures. In addition, part of the work needs a closure of the B2145 at its junction with the A27, south of Whyke Roundabout. This will be for two nights, currently scheduled for early December. Road users will follow a fully sign-posted diversion route for these nights, and signage on site will be used to confirm the dates for this.
All laybys on the bypass will need to be closed 24 hours a day throughout the duration of these improvements. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused by this.
