Improvement Scheme

Part of our programme of improvements (generally with value <£10m)

Cost:  £1.495 million

Managed by:   Area 4

All work on the A27 Drainage Improvement Scheme is now complete with the exception of connecting the new pumping station to an electricity source. This work will be carried out in October and will require minimal traffic management in place.

Where was the project located?

The scheme was carried out on the A27 Chichester Bypass between Portfield Roundabout to Fishbourne Roundabout in West Sussex.

Why was the scheme needed?

The A27 Chichester Bypass from Portfield Roundabout to Fishbourne Roundabout has a history of flooding in severe weather. This often lead to road lanes being closed for a lengthy period of time while the water was removed to make the road safe again.

What work was carried out?

The scheme works included replacing some of the drains, repairing faulty pipes, and installing equipment to pump excess water away when heavy rainfall occurs.

How did this benefit road users?

The scheme will improve safety for vehicles travelling through the area and reduce flood risks in times of heavy rain, avoiding delays caused by related congestion and closures.
