The scheme is near to completion. The replacement of the central reserve works is complete, the bridge works will complete on 24 May 2013.

Where was the project located?

The work took place on the M5 motorway between junctions 11a and 12.

Why was the scheme needed?

These works were needed on the central reserve as the current barrier was corroded and could not be properly tensioned.

Structural repairs were carried out to the piers and foundation of the bridge because of the presence of thaumasite (a severe form of sulphate attack which can reduce affected concrete to a soft crumbly material).

What work was carried out?

We installed 4km of concrete central reserve barrier, repaired the over-bridge foundations and replaced a section of embankment.

How did this benefit road users?

The work has upgraded the central reserve and bridge to current standards and this will avoid the need for temporary repairs and associated disruption.
