What is happening?
We are proposing a link between the M54 , M6 and the M6 (Toll).

When and where is this happening?
The Spending Review announcement in October 2010 listed the M54 to M6 / M6 (Toll) Link Road Scheme for potential construction in future spending review periods, subject to the outcome of statutory processes. For more information visit our Future Spending Review page.

The concept plans show broad route alignments. They are not definite and no decisions have been made at this stage.

Further development work on the options is ongoing.

Why is this happening and what will it cost?
West Midlands Area Multi Modal Study (WMAMMS) recommended the development of a link from M54 to M6/M6(Toll) to complement the proposed future Western Bypasses of Wolverhampton and Stourbridge to improve access to and from the M54 corridor and Telford.

In his response to WMAMMS the Secretary of State for Transport announced in July 2003 his support in principle for the link road, but rejected the study proposals for bypasses of Wolverhampton and Stourbridge.

An earlier commission to develop the link scheme was suspended in June 2003 because the traffic modeling work from WMAMMS and MIDMAN (West Midlands to North West Conurbations Multi-Modal Study) was not sufficiently comprehensive to allow detailed investigation of scheme economics and environmental impacts.

On 24 May 2006 the Secretary of State for Transport, Douglas Alexander announced a £112million contribution by Macquarie Infrastructure Group, the M6 Toll operator, for a range of road improvements in the West Midlands.

Following this announcement, a number of conceptual options for the link were presented at Public Information Exhibitions held in July 2006 to update the public on current developments. These can be viewed in the concept plans.

How will the scheme be carried out?
Design options are not finalised and no decisions have been made at this stage.

How will this impact on my journey?
More information about how this scheme would impact your journey will be provided once this information becomes available.

What are the benefits?
For a number of years a need for a link between the M54 , M6 and the M6 (Toll) has been recognised. Such a link would reduce the congestion on both the A460 between Wolverhampton and Cannock, and also the A449 between Wolverhampton and Gailey.

How do I find out more information?
More information will be posted on this project page as it becomes available. You can subscribe to be alerted when updates are made.
