This page describes how Travel Information providers creating travel information services or products for the public, government or industry will be able to access traffic camera images in one of a number of formats in the future. The Highways Agency has developed policies and a technical interface that will allow access to traffic cameras in a number of formats. Due to limited telecommunications resources, the Highways Agency intends to connect different types of third party users to its cameras over a period of time. Images will firstly be given to third party users that will make images available to the public. In the interim as a travel information organisation you may be eligible for a connection to the Highways Agency HANET service www.hanet.org.uk.
The service will be provided using the technical and policy systems of the Video Information Highway (VIH). It is designed to provide access to images for wide variety of users both in the travel information industry and stakeholders in the business of managing the network. The system provides for priorities to be attached to:
- Delivery of images,
- Positioning of cameras to pre-set locations
- Limited joy-stick control of cameras
