Displaying Travel Times and Delays on Variable Message Signs - Disclaimer

Travel and delay times displayed on variable message signs are an indication of the current driving conditions for the purposes of journey planning. Drivers should always adhere to road speed limits and also have regard to advisory speeds on variable and fixed signs to ensure that they are driving in a safe and legal manner.

While the Highways Agency tries to ensure that variable message signs are accurate, the dynamic nature of road traffic will mean this will not always be achievable. Road users should note the following limitations and disclaimer.

Travel and delay times shown on variable message signs are estimated times, based on monitored traffic that has completed the journey to a stated destination. Delay times are estimated by an operator who has regard to a range of factors including the type of incident causing the delay, the time of day, the prevailing weather and the volume of traffic likely to be affected.

Road users should be aware of the changing nature of road conditions and plan their journey accordingly, allowing sufficient time to reach their destination in the event of unforeseen circumstances or errors in travel time information.

We do not warrant or guarantee that travel and delay time information provided on variable message signs will be uninterrupted, error free or that defects will be corrected. The user accepts sole responsibility and all risk for using travel and delay time information presented on variable message signs. In no event will we be liable for any loss or damage including, without limitation, indirect or consequential loss or damage, or any loss or damages whatsoever arising from use or loss of use of, data or profits arising out of or in connection with the use of travel and delay time information presented on the Highways Agency’s variable message signs.
